Tuffy the teddy free crochet pattern

MATERIALS REQUIRED

(DESCRIPTIONS IN BRACKETS INDICATE THOSE USED IN THE PICTURED EXAMPLE):

  1. Yarn (Krea Deluxe Organic Cotton yarn 50 g in (A) Colour 19 Brown, (B) Colour 17 Light Brown, (C) Colour 01 White, (D) Colour 06 Yellow, (E) Colour 10 Orange, (F) Colour 41 Green or any yarn of the same colours). One ball of each colour is sufficient.
  2. Crochet hook in accordance with the yarn you use (2.5 mm crochet hook for all parts with the exception of the sweater and the shoes which use a 3.0 mm hook)
  3. Fibrefill / toy stuffing
  4. Black safety eyes (5 mm)
  5. Brown embroidery thread (DMC Cotton Six-Strand Embroidery Floss #451) 6. Stitch markers, yarn and embroidery needles

HEAD – 2. 5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 19, BROWN)

Starting from the top of his head.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: Inc in all 6 st [12]
Rnd 3: (Sc in next st, inc in next st) x 6 [18]
Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 2 st, inc in next st) x 6 [24]

Insert 5 mm plastic safety eyes between Rnd 17 and 18, 4 st apart.
Start stuffing the head firmly with fibrefill and continue to do so as you crochet the rest of the head.
Rnd 27: (Sc in each of next 2 st, dec) x 6 [18]

Rnd 28: (Sc in next st, dec) x 6 [12]
Rnd 29: Dec x 6 [6]
Sl st in next st and fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Thread the long tail through a needle. Weave the needle through the front loop of each of the 6 st, always going in the direction from the centre and under the front loop.
Pull the yarn tail and the hole should close. Insert the needle through the middle of the hole and pull through the head. Fasten off and weave the yarn tail in.

MUZZLE – 2.5 MM HOOK

(IN COLOUR 17, LIGHT BROWN)
Starting from the centre of the muzzle.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: Inc in all 6 st [12]
Rnd 3: Sc in next st, inc in next st, hdc in next st, hdc-inc in next st (mark this hdc-inc for aligning the nose later), sc in next st, inc in each of next 2 st, sc in next st, hdc-inc in next st (mark this hdc-inc for aligning the nose later), hdc in next st, inc in next st, sc in next st [18]
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing the muzzle to the head. Weave in the start yarn tail.
Embroider the nose onto the muzzle. Use all six strands of DMC Cotton Embroidery Floss 451. Use the marked stitches from Rnd 3 to centralise the nose (Picture 1). The top of the nose should be 4 st wide, the bottom of the nose should be 1 st wide. The nose should be sewn over Rnd 2 and 3 of the muzzle. Sew a vertical line from the bottom of the nose to finish the line between Rnd 1 and 2 on the bottom half of the muzzle

LEG X 2 – 2.5 MM HOOK (START IN COLOUR 01, WHITE)

Starting from the base of his leg.
For the left leg (make first)
Ch 8 with a long starting yarn tail.
Rnd 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 6 ch, 3 sc all into the last ch, now working on the other side of the foundation chain, sc in each of next 5 ch, inc in next ch [16] Rnd2:Incinnextst,scineachofnext5st,incineach of next 3 st, sc in each of next 5 st, inc in each of next 2 st [22] Rnd3:Scinnextst,incinnextst,scineachofnext4 st, hdc in next st, (hdc in next st, hdc-inc in next st) x 3, hdc in next st, sc in each of next 4 st, (sc in next st, inc in next st) x 2 [28]
Rnd 4-7: Sc in all 28 st [28]
At this stage, you can use the long starting yarn tail to sew up any gaps in the base of the foot.
Rnd8:Scineachofnext8st,decx6,scineachofnext 8 st. Mark the 11th and 12th st which will indicate the front centre of the foot 2 on the bottom half of the muzzle l.

Marked st to align nose 4st
Rnd9:Scineachofnext7st,decx4,scineachofnext 7 st [18]
Rnd 10: (Sc in each of next 4 st, dec) x 3 [15]
Rnd 11: Sc in all 15 st [15]
Start stuffing the foot firmly with fibrefill and continue doing so as you crochet up the leg.
Change to Colour 19, Brown.
Rnd 12: Into BLO, sc in all 15 st [15] Rnd 13-15: Sc in all 15 st [15]
After Rnd 15, sc an extra 1 sc. This extra sc now becomes the new end of the Rnd.
Change to Colour 21, Blue.
Rnd 16: Sc in all 15 st [15]
Change to Colour 19, Brown
Rnd 17: Into BLO, sc in all 15 st [15]
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Weave in the end yarn tail. Mark the last st of Rnd 17 as a guide for creating the body later.
For the right leg (make second)
Rnd 1-17: Repeat as for the left leg
After Rnd 17, sc in each of next 5 st (i.e. create an extra 5 sc). The 5th st now becomes the new end of the Rnd.
Do not fasten off at the end of Rnd 17, as we will continue into the body.

BODY – 2.5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 19, BROWN)

Starting from the base of the body.
Continue from the end of Rnd 17 of the right (second) leg.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, starting in the 13th st of Rnd 17 of the left leg (Picture 2), sc in each of next 15 st around the left (first) leg, sc in each of next 3 ch created before, sc in each of next 15 st around the right (second) leg [36] Rnd 2: Sc into each of the unworked edge/strand of the 3 ch created in Rnd 1, sc in each of next 33 st [36]
Rnd 3-12: Sc in all 36 st [36]
Rnd 13: (Sc in each of next 10 st, dec) x 3 [33] Rnd 14: Sc in all 33 st [33]
Rnd 15: (Sc in each of next 9 st, dec) x 3 [30] Rnd 16: Sc in all 30 st [30]
Rnd 17: (Sc in each of next 8 st, dec) x 3 [27] Rnd 18: (Sc in each of next 7 st, dec) x 3 [24] Rnd 19: (Sc in each of next 6 st, dec) x 3 [21] Rnd 20: (Sc in each of next 5 st, dec) x 3 [18] Rnd 21: Sc in all 18 st [18]
After Rnd 21, sc in each of next 5 st (i.e. an extra 5 sc), which should bring you to the back centre of the body.
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing the body to the head. Stuff the body firmly with fibrefill.


LEG OF SHORTS X 2 (IN COLOUR 21, BLUE)

Starting from the base of each leg of the shorts.
For the left leg of the shorts (make first)
With the base of the feet pointing towards you, join yarn to the first FLO from Rnd 17 of the left leg (Picture 3).
Rnd 1: Sc in all 15 FLO from Rnd 17 of the left leg [15] Rnd2:(Scinnextst,incinnextst,scinnextst,incin next st, sc in next st) x 3 [21]
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 2 st, inc in next st) x 7 [28]
Mark the 28th st of the left leg of the shorts as a guide for joining the legs of the shorts later.
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Weave in all the yarn tails.
For the right leg of the shorts (make second)
Leaving a long start yarn tail to sew up any gap between the legs of the shorts, and with the base of the feet pointing towards you, join yarn to the first FLO from Rnd 17 of the right leg.
Rnd 1: Sc in all 15 FLO from Rnd 17 of the right leg [15] Rnd 2: (Sc in next st, inc in next st, sc in next st, inc in next st, sc in next st) x 3 [21]
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 2 st, inc in next st) x 7 [28]
After Rnd 3, sc in each of next 7 st (i.e. an extra 7 sc).The 7th sc marks the new end of the Rnd. This should take you to the 7th st from Rnd 3 of the right leg of the shorts. Use the starting yarn tail to sew up any gaps between the two legs of the shorts. Continuing from the new end of Rnd 3 we will now join the two legs of the shorts.

SHORTS – 2.5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 21, BLUE)

Starting from the base of the shorts.
Rnd 4: Starting in the 23rd st from Rnd 3 of the left leg of the shorts (Picture 4), sc in each of next 28 st. This should bring you to the 22nd st of Rnd 3 of the left leg. Next, starting in the 8th st from Rnd 3 of the right leg (Picture 5), sc in each of next 28 st [56]
Rnd 5-12: Sc in all 56 st [56]
Rnd 13: Dec x 2, (sc in next st, dec, sc in next st, dec) x4,decx2,(scinnextst,dec,scinnextst,dec)x4[36] Rnd 14: (Sc in each of next 4 st, dec) x 6 [30]
Rnd 15: (Sc in each of next 8 st, dec) x 3 [27]
Rnd 16: Sc in all 27 st [27]
AttheendofRnd16,scineachofnext2st(i.e.anextra 2 sc).
Sl st in next st and fasten off. If you wish to sew the top of the shorts to the body, leave a long yarn tail. Otherwise, you can weave in the yarn tail instead. There is no need to stuff the shorts with fibrefill.

CUFF OF SOCK X 2 – 2.5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 01, WHITE)

Starting from the base of the cuff of the sock.
With the base of the feet pointing towards you, join yarn to the first FLO left from Rnd 12 of one leg (Picture 6).
Rnd 1: Sc in all 15 st [15]
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Weave in all yarn tails.

EAR X 2 – 2.5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 19, BROWN)

Starting from the tip of the ear.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: Inc in all 6 st [12]
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 3 st, inc in next st) x 3 [15] Rnd4:Dec,scineachofnext5st,dec,scineachof next 6 st [13]
There is no need to stuff the ear with fibrefill.
Flatten the base of the ear. Working through both layers, sc in each of next 6 st to close the base of the ear. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing the ear to the head.

ARM X 2 – 2.5 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 19, BROWN)

Starting from the tip of the arm.
Rnd 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
Rnd 2: (Sc in next st, inc in next st) x 3 [9]
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 2 st, inc in next st) x 3 [12] Rnd 4: Sc in all 12 st [12]
Rnd 5: Dec, sc in each of next 8 st, dec [10]
Rnd 6: Dec, sc in each of next 6 st, dec [8]
Stuff the hand (i.e. Rnd 1-6) firmly with fibrefill, and continue to stuff with gradually less fibrefill as you crochet up the remainder of the arm.
Rnd 7-15: Sc in all 8 st [8]
After Rnd 15, sc in each of next 5 st (i.e. an extra 5 sc). The 5th sc just made is the new end of the Rnd.
Flatten the top of the arm. Working through both layers, sc in each of next 4 st to close the top of the arm. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing the arm to the body.


SWEATER – 3.0 MM HOOK (START IN COLOUR 06, YELLOW)

Starting from the base of the sweater.
Start with a yarn tail long enough that you can weave in to tidy up the bottom edge of the sweater.
Ch 36.
Rnd 1: Sc into the first ch to close the ring, be careful the ch is not twisted when you do so. From here, we will work in the round. Sc in each of next 35 ch [36] Rnd2:SlstinthefirstscofRnd1,ch2.Startinginthe same st that you made the sl st, (fp-hdc, bp-hdc) x 18 [36]
Change to Colour 10, Orange yarn.
Rnd3:SlstinthefirsthdcofRnd2,ch1.Startinginthe same st that you made the sl st, sc in each of next 36 st [36]
Rnd 4: (Sc in each of next 10 st, dec) x 3 [33]
Rnd 5: Sc in all 33 st [33] Change to Colour 41, Green yarn.
Rnd 6: (Sc in each of next 9 st, dec) x 3 [30]
Rnd 7: Sc in all 30 st [30]
Rnd 8: Sc in each of next 3 st, dec, ch 7 and skip the next6stinRnd7,dec,scineachofnext5st,dec,ch7 and skip the next 6 st in Rnd 7, dec, sc in each of next 2 st [28]
I find that marking the dec made in Rnd 8 helps me crochet the next Rnd.
Change to Colour 06, Yellow yarn.

Rnd 9: Sc in each of next 3 st, dec, sc in each of next 5 ch, dec, sc in each of next 5 st, dec, sc in each of next 5 ch, dec, sc in each of next 2 st [24]
Rnd 10: Ch 2, (hdc in each of next 5 st, hdc-inc in next st) x 4 [28]
Rnd 11: Sl st in the first hdc of Rnd 10, ch 2, starting in the same hdc that you made the sl st, (hdc in each of next 3 st, hdc-inc in next st) x 7 [35]
Sl st in the first hdc of Rnd 11, fasten off and weave in all the yarn tails.

SLEEVE X 2 – 3.0 MM HOOK (START IN COLOUR 41, GREEN)

Starting from the base of the top of the sleeve.
The armholes of the sweater have been created with 6 st on the bottom and 7 st on the top from Rnd 8 of the sweater. Identify the middle of the bottom of the armhole to join the yarn to, there should be 2 st on the left and 3 st on the right (Picture 7).
Rnd 1: Starting in the same st to which you joined the yarn, sc in all 13 st [13]
Rnd 2: (Sc in each of next 3 st, inc in next st) x 2, sc in each of next 4 st, inc in next st [16]
Rnd 3: Sc in next st, change to Colour 10 Orange yarn, sc in each of next 15 st [16]
Rnd 4-5: Sc in all 16 st [16]
Rnd 6: Sc in each of next 2 st, change to Colour 06 Yellow yarn, sc in each of next 14 st [16]
Rnd 7-8: Sc in all 16 st [16]
After Rnd 8, sc in each of next 2 st (i.e. an extra 2 sc). Sl st in next st, fasten off and weave in all the yarn ends.
SHOE X 2 – 3.0 MM HOOK (IN COLOUR 41, GREEN)
Starting from the base of the shoe.
Ch 8 with a long starting yarn tail.
Rnd 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 6 ch, 3 sc all into the last ch, now working on the other side of the foundation chain, sc in each of next 5 ch, inc in next ch [16] Rnd2:Incinnextst,scineachofnext5st,incineach of next 3 st, sc in each of next 5 st, inc in each of next 2 st [22]

We will now create the shoe strap.

First mark the stitches that will form the base on either side of the strap.
Mark the 6th (yellow marker) and 17th (blue marker) st of Rnd 8 (Picture 8).
Rnd 9: Sc in each of next 6 st, the 6th st should be marked with the yellow marker, ch 9, inserting hook into the 17th st of Rnd 8 marked with the blue marker (Picture 9) and skipping the intervening 10 st around Rnd 8, sc in each of next 6 st [18]
Sl st in next st and fasten off. Weave all the end yarn tails in.
